 CONTENTS

1. What is anal cancer?
Anal cancer is a rare type of cancer that starts in the anus, the end of the rectum. It is made up of different tissues, and most cases are squamous cell carcinomas. There are two main types:

  • Squamous Cell Carcinoma: This is the most common type of anal cancer and typically develops in the anal canal, which is the portion of the anus closest to the rectum.

  • Adenocarcinoma: This type is less common and starts in the glandular cells of the anus. Adenocarcinoma is usually found in the area where the anal canal meets the rectum

2. What side effects can I expect?

  • Late toxicity risks from radiation to the anal region.

Radiation therapy is a common treatment option for anal cancer, and it can have various side effects. The following is a week-by-week summary of some of the anticipated side effects of radiation therapy for colorectal cancer:

Week 1-2:

Patients may experience fatigue and skin reactions, such as redness, itching, and dryness in the treatment area. Some people may also experience diarrhea.

Week 3-4:

Fatigue may continue to be an issue, and patients may experience new symptoms such as abdominal cramping, painful urination, and nausea. Some people may also experience increased diarrhea or changes in bowel habits.

Week 5-6:

Symptoms may continue to worsen during this time, with increased fatigue and skin reactions. Patients may also experience painful bowel movements and may notice blood in their stool. Specific skin care is needed in most patients and oral pain medications are common.

It's important to note that not all patients will experience the same side effects, and the severity of symptoms can vary widely. Healthcare providers will monitor patients closely throughout their treatment and provide support and management strategies to help alleviate any discomfort or complications that arise.
