Low-dose radiation for arthritis was linked to less disability and fewer knee replacements in a randomized trial.
Makarova and colleagues reported it on September 30, 2026, at ASTRO, Science Highlights session SH 10, Functional Radiation Medicine, abstract 4.
292 people with early knee osteoarthritis received medication alone or the same medication plus 4.5 Gy in 10 fractions.
After a median 11.9 years, the radiation group had a 67 percent lower adjusted risk of certified disability.
In grade 2 disease, disability was 31 percent versus 61 percent, and knee replacement was 14 percent versus 36 percent.
CureRays did not run the trial.
It was one center and not blinded.
